Identification needed to take your benefits
We must confirm your identity when you take your pension benefits - to comply with UK Money Laundering Regulations and guidance, and to protect you and us from financial crime, we’ll require evidence of identity when we pay your pension benefits.
We may get evidence of identity by using reference
agencies to carry out a search of sources of information about you (an identity search). This doesn’t affect your credit rating. If this identity search fails we may ask you for documents to confirm your identity. That’s why we ask you to send certain documents. Please send us copies of your documents, not originals, to:

If you deal with assets under a power of attorney, we regard you, as well as the policyholder as a customer. This means we must confirm that the power of attorney is valid and verify both your identities. To do this we need:
Power of attorney document
Please send a certified copy of the power of attorney issued by the Office of the Public Guardian. It must:
- state on each photocopied page that it’s a true and complete copy of the original;
- be signed by either the donor (if the donor still has mental capacity), or
- a solicitor, a notary or notary public, or a stockbroker. No-one else may certify a copy of a power of attorney.
Payments to a power of attorney can only be made to a designated power of attorney bank account set up on behalf of the policyholder, and not directly to the power of attorney.
For English/Welsh Lasting Powers of Attorney, the certifying person should write the following on the copy document: "I certify this is a true and complete copy of the corresponding page of the original lasting power of attorney" on each page and then on the final page "I certify this is a true and complete copy of the lasting power of attorney", along with signing and dating.
For Scottish Continuing Powers of Attorney, the certifying person should write the following on the copy document: "I certify this page to be a true and complete copy of the corresponding page of the original instrument" and on the final page "I certify the foregoing reproduction to be a true and complete copy of the original instrument" along with signing and dating.
